Monitoring silverleaf nightshade for correct timing of herbicide

Printer-friendly version

Just a reminder to everyone now that summer is nearly upon us to carefully monitor your silverleaf nightshade to correctly time your herbicide application to acheive maximum effect.

The aim of the summer application is to prevent all seedset - that is stop flowers maturing to the berry stage.

The best time to apply your summer spray is at the very beginning of flowering stage but please note that SLN has asynchronous flowering, which makes controlling it more difficult.  That means that within the same plant, flowering occurs at different stages.  Refer to the picture below to show inconspicuous mature berries already formed in addtion to flowers.

Therefore carefully monitoring is needed to determine when the first buds begin to flower.
